LA FRATERNITÉ UK trained a total of 27 community members on Safeguarding Children. A Certificate Delivery Ceremony was held on 19 November 2022 to hand the certificates to the new Champions. The project was gratefully funded by the Community Fund.
The training revolved around the training the participants on the four types of abuse: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. The sessions covered issues such as physical chastisement, neglect, leaving children home alone, domestic abuse and domestic violence, county lines, modern day slavery and trafficking, the laws in the UK, internet usage, grooming, child sexual exploitation and child criminal exploitation, and more.
The aim of these free training sessions are:
- to widely raise awareness about safeguarding children within our hard-to-reach communities;
- to educate more people and enable a wider campaign about Safeguarding Children through the champions;
- to reduce the number of referrals to / and interventions from local authorities and the police;
- to help families learn more about the laws of the land, and be better parents, and remain united with their children.
This is the first training of its kind LA FRATERNITÉ UK offered to the francophone communities, giving lots of communities locally accessible trained champions.
Participants were also offered free food parcels, baby essentials and items for women thanks to the support of our partners, Vavengers in London, the London Community Kitchen in Harrow and the Ewa Foundation in Wales.
At this project closing ceremony, the Guinean Embassy to the UK was in attendance, and continue to support the charity La Fraternité in its activities. Likewise, the Guinean Council in the UK & Ireland and the Dorcas Foundation (working with communities from Cote d'Ivoire) were present, along with Social Workers and other professionals. Several other embassies based in London were also invited, such as the Embassies representing the Francophone communities from Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Mali, and Local Authorities.
Due to the success of this pilot project, more sessions are expected from 2023 onwards, dependent on funding.
